The Volos Alykes are one of the most charming areas of the Pagasetic Gulf, with a history that stretches back centuries. The name “Alykes” comes from the natural alykes (salt deposits) that existed in the area in ancient times, when the evaporation of seawater created salt fields.
From these, the inhabitants collected precious salt – an element of vital importance to the economy and trade of the time.
The history of Alykes is closely linked to ancient Demetria, a city founded by Demetrius Poliorcetes in the 3rd century BC, and Pagases, the important port of ancient Volos, from where Jason and the Argonauts set off on their legendary journey to Colchis. The area was a commercial and naval center, with intense activity and strategic importance.
Today, Alykes is one of the most popular seaside destinations in Volos. The long coastal road is lined with cafes, restaurants, and beach bars, while the sandy beach attracts crowds of visitors during the summer months. In summer, the area comes alive with music, flavors, and colors, offering ideal moments of relaxation and fun by the sea.
